Seasons of the Church Year Mural A new addition in our church dining room is a series of new wall-hangings depicting the church liturgical calendar. This project was accomplished through the efforts of Carol Christianson. It will be dedicated during the potluck on Sunday, November 14, 2010. The mural begins with symbols which show the meaning of the Advent season. The first of these wall-hangings then proceeds to show the seasons of Christmas, Epiphany, and the time after Epiphany, including the festival Sundays of Baptism of Jesus and Transformation. On the second wall-hanging, you will observe symbols depicting the seasons of Lent, Holy Week, and Easter. The festivals occurring during this time are Palm Sunday, Easter, and Ascension. The third wall-hanging shows the seasons of Pentecost, and the time after Pentecost. This longest of the church seasons includes Holy Trinity Sunday, Reformation, All Saints Sunday, and Christ the King Sunday. The mural is constructed from fabric layers and is quilted. The backgrounds for each season are in the appropriate liturgical color. 37 different fabrics make up the various backgrounds. Over 125 different fabrics were used to create the symbols. Many of these fabrics are found on other wall-hangings in our church building. The completed mural is over 36 feet long. It was made in segments before it was finally joined into the 3 parts to make the project easier to construct and quilt. Design planning began in April 2010. Materials were selected and gathered. Work on the backgrounds began in mid-July. All design elements were completed by September 5th. Quilting began on September 15th. The entire project was completed on October 20, 2010.
